A new salmonella outbreak in Canada has been linked to dog food and treats.
Twenty-seven lab-confirmed illnesses have been reported, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada. Six people have been hospitalized.
For each case of salmonella reported to public health, research suggests 26 more cases aren’t reported.
Thirteen illnesses have been reported in Alberta, 12 in B.C., one in Ontario and one in Northwest Territories. Illness was reported between mid-February and mid-August.
More than half (59 per cent) of the people who have become ill are female. The ill people range in age from newborn up to 87 years old.
Dogs can infect people with salmonella, even if they don’t show signs of being sick.
