Ontario colleges and full-time support staff have reached a tentative agreement, bringing an end to a five-week strike that impacted all 24 colleges across the province.
The breakthrough came after a weekend-long private mediation session led by Mediator William Kaplan, which resolved the bargaining impasse between the College Employer Council (CEC) and the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU).
The deal affects about 10,000 striking employees who provide essential support to college operations and student success.
“Support staff play an important role in our colleges,” says Graham Lloyd, CEO of the CEC. “We are grateful to have them back to work.”
As part of the agreement with OPSEU, picketing at Ontario colleges will end immediately. Employees are set to return to work on Thursday, October 16th, while the tentative agreement still requires ratification by union members, with a vote expected by November 4th.
