Caledon is considering providing free fitness memberships to town recreation centres, for all residents aged 65 and older, beginning Jan. 1, 2026
The motion was introduced by Councillor Doug Maskell at a Sept. 9 General Committee meeting, and noted a significant increase in participation in June, when the town offered free access to its recreation centres for Seniors Month. At the meeting, Maskell described the June initiative as a successful “pilot.” The proposal’s age limit was specifically set at 65 and older instead of the 55-plus age group initially considered due to program expenditures.
The program’s costs would be accounted for in the town’s 2026 budget. The motion also noted similar programs for seniors already established in neighbouring cities, with Mississauga launching its program in April and Brampton in June.
