Brampton and Caledon councillors walked out of a Peel Regional Council meeting on June 12 in protest of a motion initiated by Mississauga aimed at encouraging new housing construction by deferring development charges.
The rare move underscored mounting tensions over how the Region funds infrastructure and responds to housing demand, with each municipality offering competing visions for how to spur growth without undermining financial sustainability.
The motion, introduced by Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish and seconded by Councilor Matt Mahoney, called for a series of measures aimed at easing the financial burden on developers and encouraging residential construction.
In a joint video message posted on X after the meeting, Brown and Caledon Mayor Annette Groves said they had supported an alternative motion to reduce development charges by 50 per cent for purpose-built rental housing only.
The motion was left unapproved after Brampton and Caledon councillors walked out of the meeting, leaving council without quorum.
